What is bulky waste?
Bulky waste refers to large household items that are too big to be collected as part of your normal kerbside bin collection. This typically includes furniture, white goods, mattresses, and large electrical items.
Bulky waste is one of the most common challenges homeowners face when clearing a property or decluttering. Standard recycling centres may accept some items, but transport can be difficult and charges may apply — particularly for items like fridges and mattresses which require specialist disposal.
Large furniture removal — what are your options?
When it comes to removing large furniture, you have several options depending on the volume of items and how quickly you need them gone:
- Council collection: Book a bulky waste collection through your local council — subject to availability and charges
- Charity donation: Some charities collect usable furniture for free — British Heart Foundation and similar organisations collect in certain areas
- Online selling: Facebook Marketplace and similar platforms are good for furniture with resale value
- Professional collection: The fastest and most flexible option, particularly for large volumes or urgent removals

Mattress disposal — what you need to know
Mattresses are one of the most difficult household items to dispose of. They cannot go in your standard bin, are bulky and heavy to transport, and many councils charge for their collection or have waiting lists.
Some household waste recycling centres do accept mattresses, but they may charge per item — and you'll still need to be able to transport it there yourself.
At Clean Slate Clearance, we collect mattresses as part of our bulky item removal service. All mattresses are disposed of responsibly at licensed facilities.
Fridge and white goods disposal
Fridges and freezers require specialist disposal due to the refrigerant gases they contain. These must be safely removed — a process known as degassing — before the appliance can be recycled or disposed of. This is why many standard tips and collections don't accept fridges, or charge extra for them.
We handle the collection and responsible disposal of all white goods, ensuring they are processed correctly in line with WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations.
